Module 3

Dynamic model — krill through space and time

Module 3 takes an initial krill field from Module 1 and steps it forward one week at a time, over a horizon of 14 months to 20 years. Each week every swarm is:

  • Moved — carried by its water mass’s current and a seasonal migration, with the region boundary and land respected.
  • Grown and recruited — seasonal von Bertalanffy growth raises biomass, and a seasonal pulse adds young krill.
  • Reduced by removals — predator consumption and fishery catch, with the two accounted separately.

All of the behaviour is driven by editable configuration — currents, migration, and removals — so the model changes without touching code. Outputs are a 4D density field (NetCDF), a time-series summary (Parquet) of biomass, abundance, and mean length per management unit, and a predator–fishery overlap index.
